Digital + Analog: Lunatik Touch Pen

Earlier this year, or perhaps it was late last year (the precise timing escapes me) I backed my first Kickstarter project, the Lunatik Touch Pen by MNML. The pen is a hybrid of a traditional click style pen and a touch screen stylus and although this was certainly not the most unique concept, it was a marriage of digital and analog that I had felt was long overdue. It’s not that I had never seen a dual tipped pen before, they are common enough, but this was a project that promised to transform the idea of writing on your iPad. This wasn’t yet another offering from a faceless tech accessory company that produces generic, low quality products, this was a highly thought out tool that was created by a group of designers who were basically creating the pen of their dreams. It was different because it had a soul, and I wanted in! So, I pledged my money for a collection of three pens, two polymer and one alloy dubbed the MNML Collection. I waited patiently, reading backer-only updates on the status of the pens as the target ship date slipped from April to July, bringing with it tweaks to the product until I finally came home from work one day to find a brown box on my dining room table that was begging for me to release the magic inside.

Of course, I exaggerate, but I was ecstatic when I finally opened the box to reveal three individually packaged pens that were so simple and elegant it took me a few minutes to decide which one to open first. Alloy first, from it’s premium packaging, felt heavy and sturdy and just the right size in my hand, unlike my countless other iPad styli that are smaller than your average pen and thinner. White polymer next and then black, these two light as a feather and so easy in your hand. I immediately pulled out my iPad to test them out. The writing was smooth, effortless and natural on the Pennultimate App I used first. Then to Paper by 53 to try a combination of drawing and writing, here too the tool felt so natural and it was actually quite freeing to feel so comfortable drawing as the size of the pen kept my hand from contacting the screen without causing my hand to contort.

But as with everything, the pen is not without some flaws. Although it is very natural to write and draw, the pen does not do very well with navigating through web pages or selecting apps. For some reason it’s as though these sorts of taps don’t register well without a firm and controlled gesture. It’s clear the pen was created more as a writing and drawing tool than for general navigation and I am okay with that.

Overall, my favorite pen is the polymer because of the near weightlessness of the thing, but if you are used to using a heavier pen, the alloy will suit you just fine. The analog portion of the pen writes well, like a normal rollerball, nothing special, but I am glad to be able to use standard refills when this one runs out!

Inexpensive Repurposed iPad Stand

The other day while I was at AC Moore, I came across this clear plastic frame stand and thought it would make a wonderful iPad stand. I was right! This 10″ stand holds the iPad perfectly with or without a case. There were plenty of other styles if the lucite claw foot look isn’t for you, but I love how this holds the iPad up a few centimeters off the table so that it is more pronounced on your desk. Best part is, this stand was $3! You can’t beat that! I have some stands that were at least 3x that price that don’t work nearly as well, and I know some stands for the iPad can cost 10x as much! So, if you are looking for an expensive, yet stylish, stand for your iPad, head over to your local craft store and see what they have in their framing department!

If you use a similar repurposed stand for your gadgets, let me know!

Starbucks App Pick of the Week: Instapaper

For those of you who may not already be aware, Starbucks Coffee has something of a partnership with Apple’s iTunes Store and for the past several years they have been participating in a program called Starbucks Pick of the Week. Essentially, when you visit a Starbucks location you can pick up a Pick of the Week card which will provide you, as a Starbucks patron, with a free download for a specific song off the iTunes store. The card has an image and description of the artist and track you will get and on the back is a code for you to redeem your free download. It’s very simple and a nice treat when you go in to get your daily dose of caffeine! The cards change up about once a week or so, and in recent years the Pick of the Week program has expanded to take on apps from the AppStore, tv shows from the iTunes store and even books from the iBookstore! I always make sure to check the Pick of the Week cards when I am in a Starbucks because although they often put out a lot of songs, shows, apps, and books that don’t interest me personally, every once in a while they will have a free download for something awesome! This was one of those weeks!

The App Pick of the Week was Instapaper, the highly acclaimed app for both iPhone and iPad that allows users to save internet articles for later reading on or offline. It basically caches the website so you get full text and images and also creates a simple but elegant filing system for you to keep track of articles you like as well as those you have saved for later reading. I have been very interested in this app but oddly enough never downloaded it because the $2.99 price tag always seemed a little much and I figured I could save myself the money by just bookmarking articles to read later on with an Internet connection. Then when Apple updated iOS to include a read later function that was similar to Instapaper (but, again, required an Internet connection for use) it seemed like there was no real reason for me to spend the money.

Of course, I never got over the feeling that I was missing something special with Instapaper. It was and is still frequently featured in must have app lists for both iPhone and iPad by everyone from the most prestigious technology magazines and pundits to the mass of dime a dozen technology blogs and YouTube personalities (to which I clearly belong). Today, however, is a new day as I have my own free copy of Instapaper. This is no watered down or lite version either! This is the full $2.99 version with all the bells and whistles and it will continue to be mine through updates and new iterations of the app until the end of time. I know, I am getting ahead of myself here but oh well, I am excited, what can I say?!? Stay tuned for now, as I intend to give a better review of the app after I get used to using it day in and day out. I have already established the link to save articles in my safari bookmarks menu thanks to a helpful tutorial provided through the app itself and have saved a few articles to test out.

Until next time my lovely readers {thepinkmac}

Great Tech Finds for $5

Yesterday I went shopping at two of my favorite stores; Ikea and Five Below! If you have ever shopped at either of these stores, you may already know that they are a great place to find the most random accessories for a great price and yesterday, that is what I found.

First, Ikea. They have a new section called Ikea Family where they include a collection of travel accessories like bags, briefcases, backpacks and luggage that are a sturdy quality for a low price. Browsing the area I found an assortment of travel bags at various sizes and colors, so I picked up this hot pink little travel zip bag from the Upptacka series that was only $3.99 ($3.19 with my Ikea Family card). I think this will be a great tech accessory bag for all my chords, cables, chargers and small peripherals while I travel this summer for mini vacays and getaways!

Next, I made my way to Five Below. I consider this store a Mecca for random tech accessories like cases, extra cables, sleeves and an array of other useful items that compliment my MacBook, iPad, iPods, and Blackberry. Best part is, I find something different every time I go to the store. This trip, I found a very cute neoprene iPad case for summer in navy blue and white chevron/zebra print with a hot pink lining. This case even has a separate front zippered compartment for extras which I found very cool for just $5.00!

Now, I don’t just browse the tech area when I go to this store because useful items can be hiding at any corner, and I found my next set of items in the tween clothing section. These cute bags are actually bikini bags for you to store your wet swimsuit after you have changed out of it, but practically, they are a cute waterproof clutch. So, I picked up three; one for me, my mom and my sister (mine is the nerdy owl on top)! These bags are a great size that can fit an iPad, iPod, ebook reader, or any other tech item you may need at the beach or by the pool, as well as your keys, cash, and ID. Plus, they come in an infinite variety of cute styles for just $5.00 each!

So, if you happen to be lucky enough to live by one or both of these great stores, I suggest you make a trip if you are looking for some inexpensive tech accessories for your summer of fun ahead! Happy shopping and let me know what you find!

Unboxing & Haul: Lo-fi Cameras (TLR, Holga & Lomokino)

Photojojo Rangefinder: The Most Hipster iPhone Case Ever

I read somewhere that iPhones have overtaken traditional cameras as the preferred method of image capture and with ever increasing iPhone camera specs and awesome apps like Instagram, its really no wonder. Why carry around a dedicated camera when your phone and a few apps can create a variety of lens effects that rival any point and shoot? So of course Photojojo has taken that to the next level with this ultra vintage looking iPhone Rangefinder case.

Although you can buy the casing alone for that vintage camera look, this is actually a functional case as well. With the additional magnetic iPhone camera lens kit you have the option to turn your iPhone into a “complete phoneography system.”

Carry your phone around in a vintage camera case or slung around your neck with a strap for extra hipster authenticity.

Honestly though, this case really makes me want to buy an iPhone 4(s). That $99 price tag for the complete set is such a small price to pay for the ultimate vintage feel.

What’s in Your Little Black Bag?

A few weeks ago, I heard of an online monthly subscription service called Little Black Bag that really caught my attention. I’m already a fan of Shoedazzle, which I love because it has great accessories and an ever expanding line of new items, but ultimately its not as unique as one would expect. Little Black Bag is a completely new social buying website. Based loosely on the Japanese craze “Lucky Bag Sale” where a price is set for a bag whose contents are promised to be valued greater than the purchase price, LBB combines designer accessories with online swapping. Let me just quickly run through how it works. First, like many online personalized accessory websites, you take a style quiz to determine your personal style profile. Next, you are taken to an online gallery of 100-200 items of various value that have been chosen to fit your style profile. You then are asked to choose any one item you see to add to your bag, but at this point you can also “love items” to keep track of others you may also be interested in. With that one item in your bag which is guaranteed to be yours, one to three other items are added to your bag automatically based on your personal style so that the value of the overall bag is $100-$125. At this point you cannot see what the items are, but it does tell you how many items have been added and what category they fall under (make-up, jewelry, etc). So, you head to check out to pay. LBB offers two options, either a monthly subscription price of $49.95 or a one-time buy price of $59.95. Monthly subscribers have the option to opt out on a month if they do not want to participate, and there is no contract, you can cancel your subscription at any time. Once you have paid for your bag, you can now see the other items added to your bag. If you like everything you see and are completely satisfied, you can then hit “Ship to me” and you will receive your LBB in a matter of days. If you are not satisfied with the contents of your bag, well, that’s where the social aspect of this site begins. You can then start swapping items in your bag for up to seven days until you are ready to have the items ship. It’s important to note, if you choose the swapping option, you do not have to wait an additional seven days for your bag to ship, you can spend a few hours or a few days swapping items until you’re satisfied and ship your bag at any point, but after seven days, what you have in your bag will be shipped to you, so you need to make your time count.

What does swapping entail? Well, swapping works two ways. Immediately upon check out if you choose to delay shipping your items so you have time to swap, you will probably immediately receive offers from other users who want to offer you something of theirs for something in your bag. It’s up to you if you want to take their offers, but you get these notifications immediately because when you or someone else has an item they are looking to acquire and an item (or items) they are willing to swap, the notification goes out to everyone who has the item desired. Now, you may have noticed I said items above, because you do not have to make a one for one swap. You can offer more than one item in your bag to swap for another item and the value of your item does not matter. You can offer a swap between items of differing costs, although if you really want something good you should be prepared to make a good offer or expect to be rejected. You can get a leg up on swapping by watching the news feed on the site to see what is in people’s bags, what they are swapping and the hot items of the day.

Now, the system is not perfect, and if you have items in your bag that you do not like, it is not guaranteed that you will be able to swap for items you like, which is why it is important to choose that first item carefully and make sure it is something you feel is worth the full price of the bag because you may not get anything else you like. Before I tried out the site, I read through some reviews where people did not like what they ended up with, but I also found some others where people were able to trade and get what they wanted. Personally, I think there is definitely some strategy behind the social swapping aspect of this site and I could totally imagine that there are some people out there who are so good at watching the feed and seeing what is in people’s bags that they end up with exactly the items they want each and every time. It really makes me think of that story about the guy who traded a paper clip for a house using Craigslist. Now, perhaps that is an extreme example, especially since you have only seven days to swap, but I think if you’re smart about this site you could end up with a bag full of wonderful items, but you definitely need to play the game if you want to win!

I made a video unboxing and haul detailing my experience on Little Black Bag for the first time, so please check it out if you want to see what was in my bag, what I swapped and what I ended up with!
